Should Your Drivers Take Defensive Driver Training?
Defensive driving trainingMany of us have heard about defensive driving, but; unfortunately, many know very little about defensive driving in reality.
To start, let's try to understand what defensive driving actually means. The standard Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle Operations, ANSI/ASSE Z15.1, defines defensive driving as "driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others Some would say that defensive driving means reacting to the driving environment. We believe defensive driving is much more than that. Defensive driving means understanding the driving environment so that you can proactively anticipate hazards before they happen, hazard perception, perceive or predict a potential hazard before it becomes a real one. In other words, it is essentially about being a proactive driver.
Sometimes, drivers tend to ignore safety signs or warnings and indulge in risky driving behavior. One of the primary objectives of defensive driving training is to help not only correct such problems, but also to prevent such problems. It not only teaches students important concepts of safe driving but also changes their thought process towards driving, making them a better driver.
What does one learn in defensive driving training? There are many important aspects of defensive driving training that a good training course should cover. Some of the more important concepts that students learn about in such a course include how to stay alert and focused while driving, learning to analyze any driving situation and anticipate the actions of other drivers on the road, driving safely when the road conditions are less than optimal, yielding right-of-ways to other drivers, handling emergencies how we see and what we see with, and much more.
Drivers of commercial vehicles can benefit tremendously from specialized Commercial driver training courses that teach them these concepts and how to drive economically as well. Commercial driver training enables drivers to drive responsibly and avoid accidents and liability.
